The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has revealed that it is now using Foursquare in order to keep British nationals up-to-date with any travel information changes and amendments when they are on the move. It means that while people are travelling around the ever-changing world, they can check-in their location and view any information about the venue they are at or any others nearby.

Head of digital diplomacy at the FCO Jimmy Leach said the organisation is using Foursquare to make as many travellers as possible – out of the eight million people already using the service – aware of where British embassies are, how they can seek help, as well as any other information that could be useful. He continued: “If the last six months have taught us anything, it is that the sort of advice the Foreign Office produces can be invaluable to British nationals (and others) as they live and travel overseas.”

This was confirmed even more this week when the FCO informed British nationals in Syria to consider returning to the UK. It said: “In light of the deterioration in the security situation in Syria we have amended our travel advice to inform British nationals that they should consider leaving Syria by commercial means.”

Also, in light of the nuclear disaster in Japan following the earthquake, the FCO advised British nationals to remain outside a 60km radius of the Fukushima nuclear plant, dropping its original recommendations of 80km.
